How You Can Keep Your Teeth Looking Their Best

Saturday morning saw me off to the dentist and it got me thinking about teeth health.... Its an area we often neglect so here are some tips for keeping your smile healthy.

If we are lucky, we only get one set of teeth. Having a beautiful set of sparkling white teeth is on a lot of people’s beauty wishlist. Teeth whitening and veneer surgery are big business these days. But as well as your teeth looking good, you need to make sure that they are healthy. You need to make sure that your gums are healthy too. Having a lot of problems with your teeth and gums can lead to a lot of other health problems. You might be surprised to hear that gum disease can lead to issues with your heart. Your body is all connected, so it all works together. So it is why good oral care should be a number one priority. Here is how you can help your teeth and gums be healthy and looking good.

Brushing your teeth regularly is the first step to good oral health. The minimum should be brushing your teeth first thing in the morning and then the last thing at night. If you are able to, then brushing your teeth in between meals can help a lot. I know it isn’t always easy to brush your teeth in between meals, though. It might be a bit awkward getting your toothbrush out at a restaurant! So if you can, chewing gum after eating is a good option. Make sure it is a sugar-free gum, though. Chewing gum helps to produce more saliva in your mouth. As gross as that sounds, it is good for your teeth! It helps to balance out the acidity of the food you have eaten. Too much acid can wear away the enamel, or coating, on your teeth. Chewing gum helps to fight bacteria too. This helps to reduce the chance of getting cavities.

Using toothpaste with fluoride is a good option too. Make sure that you don’t eat or swallow it, though. Fluoride helps to build up the enamel on your teeth and helps to fight bacteria. It is pretty important in oral health. Regular dental check-ups are important too. You should aim to see a dentist every six months ideally. If you have problems in between, then make sure you make an appointment or visit an emergency dentist.

Another way to help your teeth looking good and being healthy is by being careful about what you eat. Too many sugary foods can affect the quality of your teeth. It can lead to tooth decay and affect your gums. Try to reduce your sugar intake. Things like sugary drinks are some of the worst culprits. If you are going to have them, though, it is a good idea to have them through a straw. Then the drink doesn’t coat itself around your teeth like it would if you drank it normally. Watching your intake of things like red wine is good too. It can stain your teeth and make them quite yellow. Chewing gum after having a drink would help this, though.

What are your top tips for keeping your teeth looking good?
