Setting up a Home Office? Here's What you Need

Working from the comfort of your own home can be a dream, but if you aren’t surrounded by all the right elements, it can have a detrimental effect on how you work and your business. No two home-offices are the same, but regardless of the size and layout of each one, they all need some basic staples before you get going.

Good lighting

When you are setting up your business office, good lighting is essential so that you can see what you are doing! If your home allows, set up your office in a room with lots of windows, as natural light is good for the soul as well as your health. However, if this isn’t possible, make sure there is plenty of light available for you, and you’re not just working from a single bulb!

Plants and personalized decorations

Plants are beautiful and have the added bonus of purifying the air around them. They are also good for your mental health, so if you are having a stressful day, then having some greenery around you will calm you down and bring a sense of Zen to your workspace. You want to be comfortable in this space, so adding some of your favorite photos to the walls will be a nice touch, as well as any artwork or personalized accessories that take your fancy!

Ways to communicate

Most business is conducted by email these days, but sometimes it is necessary to pick up your Commander and actually speak to someone. If you frequently conduct business with people overseas, it’s a good idea to get your head around Skype or Google Hangouts so that you are not paying extortionate phone rates!

Exercise equipment

Working from home can make you lazy, so it’s important to keep some gym equipment within easy reaching distance so that you can stay active. Whether you add a treadmill into the room so that you can get a cardio fix before lunch, some free weights or swap out your desk chair for an exercise ball to work your core while you type, there are loads of options to keep on top of your health while working from home!

Stash of healthy snacks

You need to feed to sustain productivity throughout the day, so keep a stash of healthy snacks in or near your office at all times. This will discourage you from raiding the cupboard for your kid’s favorite chocolate biscuits or cooking yourself a quick and unhealthy lunch.

Sounds simple, yet ensuring that your workspace is cut off from the rest of the home is essential for productivity. If you frequently work from the couch or your bed, it is likely that you will find that time gets away from you or you often get distracted by non-work related things. If a separate room isn’t an option, try to section off your working area so that it is a designated space and only work there rather than being tempted by the kitchen table or on the sofa in front of the telly.
