There comes a time in every person's life that depending on your parents is just not enough. You want to spread your wings, own a house, get a pet and pay your own way. It might be in your late teens, in your early twenties or maybe a little later in life, but as humans we all must stand on our own 2 feet eventually.

Being independent could mean that you start looking for your own home. It can be difficult to afford a house or a flat if you don’t have a partner to share the cost with, so you can get in touch with many great granny flats builders to find new projects and good deals on small spaces for yourself.

Becoming independent could mean starting your career or a business of your own. It will take a huge amount of blood, sweat and tears. But at the end of it you will have something to be proud of.

Get to know yourself

You can never get to the stage of being independent in life if you don’t even know who you are. Take some time to understand yourself and really know what you want out of life. It can be difficult to work out what you want because our minds run wild and change, but journaling could be a great way to get the words out and learn exactly what you desire in life. It could be that you want nothing more than a big family, or maybe you want to be fit and healthy, or you could simply want to own a business. Whatever your deepest desires are, you need to know them before you can move forward with your life.

Challenge your beliefs

Opinions are something we all have, and many of us let our opinions take over the facts. This is not the right way to live and you mushy always be open to learning where you are wrong and how you can gain more knowledge. No matter what you have experienced in your life before, you need to step forward with a sense of optimism and stay open to new things.

Assert yourself

This one can be especially difficult if you are an introverted person, by knowing how to be assertive is key to being independent. You can no longer rely on others to do your dirty work for you or to fight your battles, you need to be confident in yourself and be able to push for what you want in life. Don’t let people walk all over you, let them know what they are doing and that you need respect.

Make your own decisions

Now that you are stepping out into the world as an adult, you are responsible for everything you do. Make sure that you make the right decisions for your own health and think about your personal goals, hobbies and passions. If you want to follow your dream, follow it. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.
