Teaching your children healthy habits from a young age will mean they accept them as the norm and are more likely to grow into healthy adults. Most parents know what is healthy and what is not, but here are a few tips to help you if you are unsure.




Teach By Example




There is no point insisting that your children eat healthily and not doing the same yourself. Children learn by example and it is up to you to show them that exercise is good for them and that they should not eat junk food. If they see you being a couch potato and always eating processed food they will think they is how they should be too.




Take Healthcare Seriously




Do not just assume that because they are not saying they feel unwell that they are fine. There can be problems that you are they are not aware of. This is exactly why children family dentistry is important, and check-ups with your physician or practice nurse. Ensuring there is nothing wrong with their teeth, or that they are growing as they should, can prevent other problems and should be part of your routine.




Exercise Together




Generally, children will be quite active when they are playing with other children, but unfortunately, they are just as likely to be playing together on digital devices. Medical experts suggest that children need at least one hour a day of exercise, and the best way is to do it with them as a family. Take the dog a walk together, for instance, play games like hide and seek or even get the games console out and play one of the dancing games. It just needs to be something you do together and that you all enjoy.




Get Rid Of Unhealthy Snacks And Drinks




Don’t buy unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks for your food cupboards. Plenty of fresh fruit and water is much better for them. Of course, there will be times they have a bottle of fizzy pop or a bar of chocolate, but they should be a very occasional treat and not the normal thing in your household.




A recent study showed that just by taking Sugary drinks out of people diets reduced the risk of them developing diabetes dramatically. The amount of sugar in some of these drinks, and that includes shop bought fruit juices, is larger than you may think. If you want them to have a fruit juice, make it yourself so that you know exactly what is in it.




Encourage Sleep




Children up to the age of 12 should get 10 or 11 hours of sleep each night so that their bodies have the chance to recover from the day. Studies have shown that tired children do not do so well at school and are more likely to behave badly. If your child goes to sleep and wakes up around similar times each day, they are more likely to be in a good mood and stay alert.




Sleep is like everything else in your lives, and adults are adversely affected by a lack of it too. Making sure you get enough sleep is just one of the other things you set a good example for.
